Officers investigate tire in SoCal crash that killed five
ONTARIO, Calif. A shredded tire made by a Charlotte company might have caused a pickup truck to veer off a freeway and into a tree in southern California.
Five family members were killed in the crash, and authorities were examining the pickup’s left rear tire, where tread had sheared off.
The tire, made by Charlotte-based Continental, is being studied as well as speed during the crash.
In 2002, Continental recalled some sizes of its ContiTrac A-W tires installed on Ford vehicles because of tread separations.
It isn’t clear whether the truck in the accident had the same type of tire as those that were recalled.
A Continental spokesman says the company hasn’t been given a chance to inspect the vehicle or tire in the accident.
