Carolina Coast Harley-Davidson - HOG Chapter # 3567
Our August 1st HOG meeting was shy a few members due to the Sturgis Rally—only about 85 members were in attendance. It was still a nice room full and the monthly tailgate party drew a crowd as usual.
There are several August event options—-CCHD’s Customer Appreciation Day on August 4th, Snead’s Ferry Shrimp fest ride leaving CCHD at 10:30am, Pure Gold’s—Gold Rush August 18th, HOG club lunch ride to the Front Porch August 19th, and the National HOG Rally leaving CCHD at 6am heading for Knoxville TN. August hosts something for everybody! Some of these events will have passed by the time you receive your newsletter—hope you got to enjoy a few of them.
September also has a whole host of rides and events to choose from. The most important one for club members and their immediate families ONLY—is our annual Family Picnic. The picnic is at Hugh McRae Park on Sunday September 9th. This is a free event - our club pays for the food (you are encouraged to bring a desert) –a nice steak dinner, member volunteers do the cooking (you are welcome to help) member volunteers set up a day of fun & games for you and your families. This day is also a time for us to reflect on the loved ones we’ve lost, those who will not be at our family picnic anymore. Members we’ve lost include Ernie Barbeau (he used to do all the cooking), Ed Dean, Blake Stallings, Paul Minervini, Larry Dillon, Frank House-past director, Wanda Binkley—past LOH, Jack Johnson—past director, Paul Huffman—past director, Mike Moore, Angie Holliday, Willard Scott, and Ron Kelly. If you would like to join us for the short memorial ride prior to lunch at the park please be at CCHD by 10:45am and ready for an 11am departure. Otherwise we will see you at the park. YOU MUST —MUST—SIGN UP BY THE SEPTEMBER 5TH HOG MEETING IN ORDER TO ASSURE a nice juicy steak. You are welcome to just show up the day of the event and participate in the games, but all you will get is a HOT-DOG! You can call CCHD @ 791-9997 and leave your head count with the receptionist. This is a rain or shine event as we would have purchased all of the food ahead of time—we will be at a large shelter (hope we won’t need it!).
The Carolina Harley-Davidson Association presents their annual Fall Mountain Rally the weekend of September 15th in Maggie Valley. There is no planned leaving time as a group; there will several of us heading out on Thursday for sure. There will be more concrete information on that at the September meeting. FYI—it’s 392 miles from CCHD to Maggie Valley—a perfect day’s ride! This event is an official HOG PIN STOP.
Next up would be our annual tried and true “Dine-a-Round” September 23rd.—-What is it you ask?—you RIDE & DINE at several different stops. The appetizers will begin at CCHD at 11am; from there you will proceed to 2 or 3 other stops hosted by other fellow members for the main course, deserts, and drinks. If you would like to HOST a stop please contact Rick/Jody Porter 367-1644 to volunteer. Hosts may submit their expenses to the club for re-imbursement, if they chose to do so. There is just a $5 per person charge to cover the cost of food. This is a member only event —no friends or distant relatives please!
Our group is planning a day ride to the Muscadine Harvest Festival in Kenansville on September 27th. Groups of 15 or more who purchase their tickets in advance will get a special rate of $10.00 per ticket, individual advance tickets are $15.00 and at the gate tickets are $20.00. Food, entertainment and wine tasting are what the day has in store. See Janice at the September meeting if you would like to go and secure advance tickets. This is only a nice 56-mile day ride.
Other clubs Events in September include: The Red Knights Tribute marking the 6th anniversary of 911 on September 8th. Details have been posted at CCHD and registration can be done thru Britt’s Motor sports. Rolling Thunder is having their annual event and their event details are posted on the HOG bulletin board at CCHD.
Bob Jones presented the Carolina Coast HOG chapter with a “small” plaque (he says there will be a bigger one next time) as a Thank You for our participation in the Hospice annual 5 county poker run. This year’s participants raised $8000.00 —-TO DATE—this annual event has raised over $30,000.00. Several of our lost members had been touched by this amazing organization. Keep up the good work!
Looking a little beyond September—because we have to for some events— There is an overnight to Beaufort, N.C. under way for Saturday October 6th. This is for the ladies. Those of you who had signed up at the August meeting already have a room reserved at the Anchorage House Bed & Breakfast. Two ladies per room—it’s going to be cozy! More ladies are encouraged to ride (or drive—carpool) —you’ve all heard of MALE BONDING—well it’s time for a little FEMALE BONDING. We will depart CCHD at 10am and stop along the way for a coastal lunch before completing our 91-mile journey. Please call Janice at 791-9997 if you think you would like to participate or if you have any questions. B & B’s tend to have limited rooms (4 to 6) so we may need to book at more than one if there is enough interest. This will also be a rain or shine event—we don’t need the sun to shop, eat, drink OR be merry!
At the August meeting we touched on the 105th H-D anniversary celebration / 25th HOG Anniversary which takes place in Milwaukee in August 2008. It’s truly not too early to begin your plans. Registering for the HOG Rally opened up on line August 1st. Some of us are already registered. CCHD is looking into securing rooms much like we did for the 100th anniversary. Please check your HOG tales for regular updates and ride routes. CCHD is in the path of one of the OFFICIAL ride routes —organized rides will leave from every part of the country and end up in Milwaukee on the same day—–they’ve done it before and they will do it again. IF you think you would like to take part in this historical H-D event let us know so that you can be contacted and updated as details unfold.
HOG CLUB T’s and badges are at CCHD. Many of you picked them up at the August meeting. If you would like to pick yours up before the September meeting they are available at the reception desk as you enter CCHD.
Don’t forget to pick up a raffle ticket to win a new Dell Laptop computer. Tickets are $20.00 each—available to anyone (not just club members) and funds raised FUEL YOUR CLUB operating account. If you don’t need one yourself—it would make a great gift. As soon as 100 tickets are sold we will have the drawing. Contact Rick Porter @367-1644 for yours!
October’s meeting will be a Meet & Eat meeting. Bring your family secret recipes to share with the group. It’s like a FEEDING FRENZIE whenever we do this. The meeting will be brief and to the point so we can get to some serious eating.
Something to be thinking about for 2008… If you are interested in being a CCHDHOG Chapter Officer for 2008, please contact any of the current officers. Some are returning and some are not, so several positions will be open.
Remember, if you have any suggestions, ideas for rides, or questions, please contact one of the chapter officers. And don’t forget, we have a Suggestion Box.
Be sure to check Dial-A-Ride 341-5241 and Ride Safe!

In Loving Memory
Bailey Parks
September 1, 1994 - July 18, 2007
Dear Family and Friends,
On Wednesday, July 18th, 2007 Bailey took his last walk along the docks here in Charleston. After sailing nearly 25,000 nautical miles and riding all across the United States in his Harley-Davidson sidecar to help others, it was cancer that finally caught up with him.
On Wednesday, July 18th, 2007 Bailey took his last walk along the docks here in Charleston. After sailing nearly 25,000 nautical miles and riding all across the United States in his Harley-Davidson sidecar to help others, it was cancer that finally caught up with him.
Please excuse our group email for such personal news, but Bailey was one of those special dogs. His life touched so many people in so many ways that writing an individual email to each of you would have taken weeks. We should all be so lucky to have met and befriended such a large number. Through Bailey - Janet and I feel equally blessed to have you in our lives, either past or present.
Some of you know Bailey from our time in North Carolina where we worked and lived what most would call normal lives. Back then, he was young and had no idea about the travels his life would take him on. Some of you know him from his time as a sailor, bravely crossing oceans and acting as our international ambassador of friendship in every port our boat called home. Some of you know him from his well-documented Hogs For Dogs ride across America to help people with disabilities where his smile and goofy antics helped us capture the country’s heart long enough to have you join us in the campaign to help others.
Regardless of how you knew him, he was usually the way we met you. Bailey, and Max who is still with us at 14 1/2, opened doors to new friendships almost daily. In his final days here in Charleston he would take off down the dock on his daily walks, carrying his leash in his mouth and stopping or diverting at every opportunity to meet someone new. That was his thing — making friends. And we loved him for that.
Just as he lived his life, Bailey met the challenge of cancer head on. He smiled, wagged his tail and continued to make friends right up until the very end. And so it was with his friends at Northwoods Animal Hospital in Cary, NC that we turned to for their assistance in ending his pain. Bailey licked my face as I carried him in my arms, with Janet at my side, into the vet hospital for his last visit. Bailey was so very brave and, surrounded by people who knew and loved him, he passed peacefully at 8:51 am.
To commemorate his life, Bailey’s remains will be cremated and then taken to sea aboard our sailboat, Charbonneau, where his ashes will be given back to the sea he loved so much. Perhaps, after all his attempts to catch them while we were sailing, Bailey will have the chance to swim with the dolphins. He always loved them so.
Thank you for being a part of Bailey’s, and our, lives. While we are sad to have lost such a loyal friend, we were honored to have him in our lives and to have helped him end his pain with dignity. Rather than condolences, we’d love to hear from you with any humorous or positive memories you have of Bailey. If he touched you in any way, please honor his life by sharing your story with us.
May you all have the love of a dog like Bailey in your lives. Thank you for being in ours.
With much love and sadness,
Blaine, Janet and Max Parks

Incorporated terms may include, but are not restricted to:
-
Rules and limits on liability for personal injury or death.
-
Rules and limits on liability for delay.
-
Rules and limits on liability for baggage, including fragile or perishable goods, and availability of excess valuation charge.

-
Rules on reconfirmation of reservations, check-in times, and refusal to carry.
-
Rights of the carrier and limits on liability for delay or failure to perform service, including schedule changes, substitution of alternate carriers or aircraft and rerouting.

You also have the right, upon request, to receive free of charge the full text of the applicable terms incorporated by reference from each of the transporting air carriers. Information on ordering the full text of each carrier’s terms is available at any U.S. location where the air carrier’s tickets are sold.
WARSAW AND MONTREAL NOTICES
If the passenger’s journey involves an ultimate destination or stop in a country other than the country of departure the Warsaw Convention or the Montreal Convention may be applicable and the applicable Convention governs and in most cases limits the liability of carriers for death or personal injury, delay, and in respect of loss of or damage to baggage. See also notices headed “Notice of Baggage Liability Limitations” and “Advice to International Passengers on Limitation of Liability”.
NOTICE OF CONTRACT TERMS INCORPORATED BY REFERENCE
As used in this contract “ticket” means the passenger ticket and baggage check, of which these conditions and the notices form part; “carriage” is equivalent to “transportation”; “carrier” means any air carrier that carries or undertakes to carry the passenger or his baggage hereunder or perform any other service incidental to such air carriage; “electronic ticket” means the Itinerary/Receipt issued by or on behalf of Carrier, the Electronic Coupons and, if applicable, a boarding document; and “SDR” means the Special Drawing Right as defined by the International Monetary Fund (as of April 2004, 1 SDR ~ $1.50). “Warsaw Convention” means the Convention for the Unification of Certain Rules Relating to International Carriage by Air signed at Warsaw, 12th October 1929, and/or that Convention as amended at The Hague, 28th September 1955, and/or that Convention as amended at Montreal, 25th September 1975, and/or that Convention as amended at Montreal, 25th September 1975, whichever may be applicable. “Montreal Convention” means the Convention for the Unification of Certain Rules for International Carriage by Air signed at Montreal, 28th May 1999.
Carriage hereunder is subject to the rules and limitations relating to liability established by the Warsaw Convention or the Montreal Convention unless such carriage is not “international carriage” as defined by the applicable Convention. To the extent not in conflict with the foregoing carriage and other services performed by each carrier are subject to: (I) provisions contained in this ticket, (II) applicable tariffs, (III) carrier’s conditions of carriage and related regulations which are made part hereof (and are available on application at the offices of carrier) except in transportation between a place in the United States or Canada and any place outside thereof to which tariffs in force in those countries apply.
Carrier’s name may be abbreviated in the ticket, the full name and its abbreviation being set forth in carrier’s tariffs, conditions of carriage, regulations or timetables; carrier’s address shall be the airport of departure shown opposite the first abbreviation of carrier’s name in the ticket; the agreed stopping places are those places set forth in this ticket or as shown in carrier’s timetables as scheduled stopping places on the passenger’s route; carriage to be performed hereunder by several successive carriers is regarded as a single operation. A carrier issuing a ticket for carriage over the lines of another carrier does so only as its Agent.
Any exclusion or limitation of liability of carrier shall apply to and be for the benefit of agents, servants and representatives of carrier and any person whose aircraft is used by carrier for carriage and its agents, servants and representatives. Checked baggage will be delivered to bearer of the baggage check. In case of damage to baggage moving in international transportation complaint must be made in writing to carrier forthwith after discovery of damage and, at the latest, within seven days from receipt; in case of delay, complaint must be made within 21 days from date the baggage was delivered. See tariffs or conditions of carriage regarding non-international transportation.
This ticket is good for carriage for one year from date of issue, except as otherwise provided in this ticket, in carrier’s tariffs, conditions of carriage, or related regulations. The fare for carriage hereunder is subject to change prior to commencement of carriage. Carrier may refuse transportation if the applicable fare has not been paid.
Carrier undertakes to use its best efforts to carry the passenger and baggage with reasonable dispatch. Times shown in timetables or elsewhere are not guaranteed and form no part of this contract. Carrier may without notice substitute alternate carriers or aircraft, and may alter or omit stopping places shown on the ticket in case of necessity. Schedules are subject to change without notice. Carrier assumes no responsibility for making connections.
Passenger shall comply with Government travel requirements, present exit, entry and other required documents and arrive at airport by time fixed by carrier or, if no time is fixed, early enough to complete departure procedures. No agent, servant or representative of carrier has authority to alter, modify or waive any provision of this contract. Presentation of a valid ticket entitles the passenger to transportation only between the points and via the routing designated thereon. Flight coupons will be honored only in the order in which they were issued. Tickets are not transferable to others.
A reservation is subject to cancellation by the carrier if the passenger is not available for boarding at the loading gate at least 10 minutes prior to scheduled departure for flights between U.S. points or up to 30 minutes for all other travel. Failure to occupy reserved space may result in the carrier canceling continuing, connecting, or returning space reserved by the passenger.
CARRIER RESERVES THE RIGHT TO REFUSE CARRIAGE TO ANY PERSON WHO HAS ACQUIRED A TICKET IN VIOLATION OF APPLICABLE LAW OR CARRIER’S TARIFFS, RULES OR REGULATIONS
NOTICE OF BAGGAGE LIABILITY LIMITATIONS
Liability for loss, delay, or damage to baggage is limited unless a higher value is declared in advance and additional charges are paid. For international travel (including domestic portions of international journeys) to which the Warsaw Convention applies the liability limit is approximately $9.07 per pound ($20 per kilogram) for checked baggage and $400 per passenger for unchecked baggage. For international travel (including domestic portions of international journeys) to which the Montreal Convention applies the liability limit is approximately $1500 (1000 SDR) per passenger for all baggage. For travel wholly between U.S. points federal rules require any limit on an airline’s baggage liability to be at least $2800 per passenger. Excess valuation may be declared on certain types of articles. Some carriers assume no liability for fragile, valuable or perishable articles. Further information may be obtained from the carrier.
NOTICE–OVERBOOKING OF FLIGHTS
Airline flights may be overbooked, and there is a slight chance that a seat will not be available on a flight for which a person has a confirmed reservation. If the flight is overbooked, no one will be denied a seat until airline personnel first ask for volunteers willing to give up their reservation in exchange for a payment of the airline’s choosing. If there are not enough volunteers the airline will deny boarding to other persons in accordance with its particular boarding priority. With few exceptions persons denied boarding involuntarily are entitled to compensation. The complete rules for the payment of compensation and each airline’s boarding priorities are available at all airport ticket counters and boarding locations. Some airlines do not apply these consumer protections to travel from some foreign countries, although other consumer protections may be available. Check with the airline or your travel agent. For all flights departing from the European Union and all flights to the European Union if on an European operating carrier, if you are denied boarding or you flight is cancelled or delayed for at least two hours, ask at the check-in counter or boarding date for the text stating your rights, particularly with regard to compensation and assistance. ADVICE TO INTERNATIONAL PASSENGERS ON LIMITATION OF LIABILITY
Passengers on a journey involving an ultimate destination or a stop in a country other than the country of origin are advised that the provisions of the Warsaw Convention or the Montreal Convention may be applicable to the entire journey, including any portion entirely within the country of origin or destination. For such passengers to whom the Warsaw Convention applies on a journey to, from, or with an agreed stopping place in the United States of America, the Convention and special contracts of carriage and/or applicable tariffs provide that the liability of certain carriers for death of or personal injury to passengers is limited in most cases to proven damages not to exceed $75,000 per passenger, and that liability up to such limit shall not depend on negligence on the part of the carrier. The limit of liability of $75,000 above is inclusive of legal fees and costs except that in case of a claim brought in a state where provision is made for separate award of legal fees and costs, the limit shall be the sum of $58,000 exclusive of legal fees and costs. The names of carriers that are parties to such special contracts and/or applicable tariffs are available at all ticket offices of such carriers and may be examined on request. In addition, some carriers have adopted a limit of approximately $150,000 (100,000 SDR) per passenger, pursuant to the U.S. Department of Transportation Order 97-1-2 (10th January 1997). For such passengers traveling by a carrier not a party to such special contracts and/or applicable tariffs or on a journey not to, from, or having an agreed stopping place in the United States of America, liability of the carrier for death or personal injury to passengers is limited in most cases to approximately $10,000 or $20,000.
For such passengers to whom the Montreal Convention applies, the Convention provides that the liability of carriers for death or personal injury to passengers is approximately $150,000 (100,000 SDR) per passenger, and that liability up to such limit shall not depend on negligence on the part of the carrier. In addition, the liability of carriers for death or personal injury to passengers is unlimited if death or personal injury was due to the negligence or other wrongful act or omission of the carrier or its servants or agents. The Convention also provides that the liability of carriers for delay is limited in most cases to proven damages not to exceed $6,225 (4150 SDR) per passenger.
Additional protection can usually be obtained by purchasing insurance from a private company. Such insurance is not affected by any limitation of the carrier’s liability under the Warsaw Convention, special contracts of carriage and/or applicable tariffs, or the Montreal Convention. For further information please consult your airline or insurance company representative.

The Certificate of Registration can be used to provide proof of ownership if you ever lose or misplace your sales receipt.
- HOW TO APPLY THE NBR LABEL

Our labels are specially engineered to be tamper-proof. They are designed to shred if removal is ever attempted. Police can identify a bike in the NBR database even with a partial label. First, locate the manufacturer’s serial number stamped on your bike. It is usually located in one of these four areas on your bike. Write your bicycle serial number on the label with a ball point pen.
To maximize its strength, pick a good location for the label on your bike. Look for a smooth surface. Under the top tube near the saddle is a good place. Application works best when the temperature is between 60° and 110° Fahrenheit, you can heat the bike frame with a hair dryer if necessary. Clean and dry the surface. Expose about half of the adhesive area and place exactly where you want your label. Peel back the rest of the liner paper and smooth the label on the frame. Press down firmly for about 2 minutes, giving special attention to the edges. For best results, let the label set for 24 hours before using the bike. Once the label is attached to your bike, it can not be removed intact. Your bike is now permanently labeled with your NBR number and your serial number is registered in the NBR database., let the label set for 24 hours before using the bike.
